Summary:

Responsible for first-line management of the company’s corrosion control program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Assures that any technical, compliance, or safety issues identified by the technicians/contractors are being addressed and reported to the Director of Operations, with dotted-line reporting to the Corrosion Control staff within the Asset Integrity group.

·       Establishes and measures workgroup goals and performance as well as individual performance.

·       Responsible for supervising direct reports and providing technical and program direction to corrosion control employees within a geographic area.

·       Develop the work group's annual operating expense and capital project/tool budgets.

·       Conducts personnel reviews and oversees career planning and employee development for direct reports in the work group.

·       Conducts personnel interviews and is involved in hiring and promotional opportunity decisions for direct reports.

·       Provides technical expertise, training, qualification evaluations, and continuous guidance to area Pipeline Integrity Technicians. 

·       Provides technical expertise and guidance to Operations and Engineering for designing, implementing, monitoring, and troubleshooting the Company’s corrosion control/cathodic protection assets.

·       The Supervisor has expert qualifications and experience in the following subjects and/or tasks related to the corrosion control field:

o   corrosion control regulations

o   integrity management regulations

o   external/internal/atmospheric corrosion monitoring and mitigation procedures and processes

o   Assessment and repair of pipeline defects.

o   technical support, training, and qualification/evaluation of pipeline integrity technicians

o   design of cathodic protection systems

o   working knowledge of corrosion control databases and field data collection devices

o   corrosion and pipeline data management and integration

o   specifications for contract corrosion control services

o   SOP and Engineering Standards related to corrosion control practices.  

·       Ability to consistently analyze and resolve complex corrosion control issues involving multiple components, personnel, and operations

·       Knowledge, skills, and abilities to document activities and inspections as well as review same to discern issues with the accuracy of data and information contained in reports prepared by others.

·       Responsible for QA/QC of pipe inspection reports and pipeline condition assessments performed by area Pipeline Integrity Technicians.

·       Knowledge, skills, and ability to interpret and apply the company’s procedures with an appreciation of underlying industry codes and standards and government regulations.

·       Knowledge, skills and abilities to defend the company’s technical and procedural positions related to corrosion control activities and represent the company in an agency audit, inspection, or enforcement action.

·       Specific responsibilities related to the support and QA/QC of work done by area Pipeline Integrity Technicians include but are not limited to the following:

o   Provide supervision and technical support related to external corrosion control monitoring and mitigation with in-depth knowledge of rectifiers, test points, bonds, close interval survey, current demand, etc.

o   Cathodic protection system design and installation to include impressed current and galvanic anode systems; deep and shallow anode groundbeds

o   Cathodic protection testing to include interference testing and mitigation

o   Provide technical support related to internal corrosion monitoring and mitigation with in-depth knowledge of internal corrosion coupons, internal corrosion sampling and analysis and use of internal corrosion inhibitors and biocides.

o   Provide technical support related to atmospheric corrosion monitoring and mitigation to include coating inspections, coating failure investigations and re-coating/painting specifications, management and oversight

·       Ability to analyze and resolve complex corrosion control problems involving technical and personal performance issues and document findings and recommendations for implementing the resolution across the company.

·       Identifies potential problems with company procedures written to comply with state and federal regulations and department technical policies and practices. Trains field personnel and implements procedures; monitors field activities for compliance with procedures through daily contact, reports, summaries and periodic inspections. 

·       Develops, supports, and enforces the department technical policies and procedures for maintaining and operating pipeline systems. Evaluates how procedures impact field manpower, employee safety, materials, equipment, and expenses to meet minimum requirements and the desired level of reliability and performance.

·       Can design and develop training materials that instruct and verify the knowledge of area technical personnel.  Shares this material across the company and participates as an instructor.  Provides this material in a way that supports and satisfies the requirements of the Employee Qualification Program. 

·       Assists in developing the annual O&M and capital budgets for the Operations department.  This involves providing input and feedback to areas on maintenance work scopes, reviewing or developing cost estimates, analyzing the feasibility of proposed solutions and suggesting innovative alternatives, and ensuring the equipment specified is state-of-the-art and best fulfills the intended purpose.  Assists the area in preparing capital budget projects and supports the projects through final approval and completion.

·       Keeps abreast of state-of-the-art equipment and innovations being developed for the hazardous liquids and natural gas pipeline industry to improve performance and safety.  Recommends testing, evaluation, and implementation when appropriate. Can set up tests and trials and present results convincingly.  Examples include Data acquisition equipment, detection and mitigation of microbiological-influenced corrosion, and pipeline coatings.

·       Participates in accident investigations and failure analysis on pipeline facilities, including making recommendations to prevent the reoccurrence of failures.

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements for this position are listed below:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Eight + years experience in the oil/gas industry and/or in a supervisory role.
  • An additional two years of experience is required in lieu of a formal degree. 
  • NACE CP Level IV preferred; NACE certification required.
  • The preferred candidate possesses excellent oral and written communication skills. Highly developed ability with PC’s, office computer software and corrosion-related data and data management systems is required.

Working Conditions:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered by an employee while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Usually, normal office working conditions. 
  • Must be able to remain stationary 50% of the time due to prolonged periods of sitting or standing. 
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required. 
  • Occasional visits to industrial/manufacturing settings may include exposure to various materials and chemicals, extreme temperature conditions and loud machinery, and require appropriate personal protective equipment.
