 Summary

As Senior Analyst–Tax Controversy, you will document and help to defend all manner of the company’s tax return positions on audit.  The Senior Analyst-Tax Controversy works collaboratively with the company’s tax professionals in income, sales and use, and property tax, as well as with leaders throughout the business, to the ensure the company’s interests are protected.  The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, self-starter with a strong income tax compliance background and a solid working knowledge of tax and accounting software and systems. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with development and maintenance of analytical tools to document and demonstrate tax return positions taken across multiple taxing jurisdictions.
  • Performs research in connection with and helps prepare responses to inquiries from federal and state taxation authorities.
  • Documents technical and complex tax return positions and related issues, consulting with other team members as necessary.
  • Prioritizes and manages multiple assignments of varying sizes and complexity within given timeframe and budget.
  • Develops an understanding of business structures and tax effects.
  • Works on special projects as needed.

Education and/or Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements for this position are listed below: 

Required education or minimum level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related degree.
  • CPA certification preferred.

Desired Characteristics:

  • 5-8 years of experience in any of ad valorem tax, transaction tax, or multi-state corporate income compliance, preferably in the same or similar industry.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm to learn about and work to defend tax return positions across multiple areas of taxation (e.g., income, tax, transaction tax, and ad valorem tax) simultaneously.
  • Excellent tax research skills using various tax services and sources such as RIA, BNA, etc.
  • Strong organizational, time management, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Adherence to high moral, ethical, and personal values in decisions, communications, actions, and when dealing with others.
  • Tax controversy or tax planning experience preferred.

Software Knowledge:

  • Exposure to Data Visualization and Business Analytics tools (such as Tableau/Alteryx/Power BI) strongly desirable/preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word required.
  • Knowledge of corporate and/or partnership tax preparation software packages (OneSource IT, OneSource IT Express, GoRs, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience with SAP desirable.

Working Conditions:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

  1. Usually, normal office working conditions.
  2. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time due to prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
  3. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
  4. Occasional visits to industrial/manufacturing settings, which may include exposure to various materials and chemicals, as well as extreme temperature conditions and loud machinery, and require appropriate personal protective equipment.
