Summary: Work with a team of engineering subject matter experts in underground hydrocarbon storage in both reservoirs and caverns.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The following reflect common duties performed by the Senior Engineer (Underground Storage):

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to Operations, Engineering, Commercial and Legal for the design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the Company’s underground hydrocarbon storage assets.
  • Develop projects (both capital and O&M) to address identified well/field performance issues and opportunities, including feasibility studies, scope, cost estimates, contractor qualifications and bids
  • Manage projects at the request of Operations
  • Assist in the development of the annual O&M and capital budgets for the Operations department by providing cost and schedule data for proposed projects
  • Assist with various regulatory filings as required
  • Participate in new underground hydrocarbon storage facility design and commissioning
  • Assist in the preparation of designs for facility modifications and incorporation of new equipment
  • Facilitate equipment installation including modifications to designs to meet functional requirements, and coordinate communication with multiple groups (vendors, suppliers, contractors, commercial, engineering and operations) as requested by Operations
  • Stay current with technology development in petroleum engineering/underground hydrocarbon storage and recommend
    testing, evaluation and implementation of improvements as appropriate
  • Participate in accident investigations and failure analysis on underground hydrocarbon storage facilities including making
    recommendations to prevent reoccurrence of failures

The Underground Hydrocarbon Storage Senior Engineer has knowledge and expertise in the following areas:

  • Underground hydrocarbon storage and underground injection control regulations (federal, state and local)
  • Well planning, design, permitting, drilling, completion, workovers and abandonment
  • Salt cavern solution mining
  • Reservoir management
  • Prospect evaluation
  • Facility and equipment sizing
  • Troubleshooting
  • Well databases and field data collection devices
  • Well logging
  • Well testing
  • Best practices for petroleum engineering (emphasis on underground hydrocarbon storage)
  • Disposal well planning, permitting and operation

 

Requirements Education and/or Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements for this position are listed below: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering, or other engineering degree with adequate petroleum engineering experience.
  • 6-10 years petroleum engineering experience, with at least 3-4 of those years with experience in underground hydrocarbon storage (salary and title will be commensurate with level and type of experience).
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex well, equipment and field issues involving multiple components, personnel, and operations
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to document activities as well as review same to discern issues with accuracy of data and information contained in reports prepared by others
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to develop, interpret and apply company procedures with an appreciation of underlying industry codes and standards and government (federal, state and local) regulations
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to defend the company’s technical and procedural positions related to underground hydrocarbon storage, and to represent the company in an agency audit, inspection, or enforcement action
  • The preferred candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative environment, possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be self-directed and highly organized. In addition to learning/using Company-required software (SAP, Aptus, ADP eTime, Microsoft Office, etc. Well database and reservoir simulation skills are helpful).

Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

1. Usually, normal office working conditions.
2. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time due to prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
3. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
4. Occasional visits to industrial/manufacturing settings which may include hazardous materials and chemicals, as well as extreme temperature conditions and loud machinery, and require appropriate personal protective eq
uipment.

 

Required experience is commensurate with the selected job level:

  • The Engineer level requires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 3-6 years of relevant job related experience
  • The Senior Engineer level requires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 6-10 years of relevant job related experience
  • The Staff Engineer level requires Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 10+ years of relevant job related experience
  • The Principal Engineer level requires Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 12+ years of relevant job related experience with a strong preference for a PE license
